Position Available: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator or Trainee

Performs Wastewater Treatment Plant work. Work involves performing tasks intended to acquaint the worker with the principles and techniques of a Wastewater Treatment Plant operation. Applicants must have a background in Math (Algebra 1), Microsoft Excel, Labsetting testing, and plumbing or Mechanical experience. Workers are exposed to dirt and soil, sewage-chemicals and hazards of working around moving equipment and with power tools. Workers are required to work weekends and holidays and subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies. Work requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work indoors and outdoors, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds. Effective March 4th, a contractor for the Town Chesapeake Beach will begin performing interior rehabilitation work on the Richfield Station water tower. The work is scheduled to last until July 2013. The work should not interfere with or disrupt water distribution or water service to any of the Town’s water customers.

Bay Restoration Fee Financial Hardship Exemption -- On May 26, 2004, Senate Bill 320 was signed into law, creating the Bay Restoration Fund (“BRF”). The purpose of the bill was to create a dedicated fund financed by wastewater treatment plant users to be used to upgrade Maryland’s wastewater treatment plants with enhanced nutrient removal (ENR) technology. On July 1, 2012, House Bill 446 increased the mandated BRF fee from $2.50 per month to $5.00 per month, and required that BRF fee billing authorities develop a financial hardship fee waiver plan for low income households.

Residents of the Town of Chesapeake Beach may apply directly to the Town for an exemption from the fee due to substantial financial hardship.

Public Service Announcement from the MD State Highway Administration -- MD 0261 BAYSIDE ROAD BRIDGE 0401101 OVER FISHING CREEK -- Public Meeting scheduled for June 4, 2013 at the Northeast Community Center from 6-7:30 PM

The bridge on MD 261(Bayside Road) over Fishing Creek is scheduled for replacement. Originally constructed in 1940, the bridge is nearing the end of its useful service life. The main objectives of this project are to replace the deteriorating bridge, increase the vertical opening beneath the bridge and increase the width of the bridge to provide a safer traveled area. The new bridge will provide 5’ – 8” sidewalks and 5’ shoulders on both sides of the roadway, which meets ADA requirements and SHA’s bicycle requirements. A lane will be added to provide for the turning movement at the Meers Ave intersection. The vertical profile is being raised to allow larger water vessels access to destinations west of the bridge. Replacing the bridge will save money on future maintenance spending and support safety and mobility as part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program. Reminder on Dogs -- According to the Calvert County Animal Control Ordinance, all dogs must be on a leash when not on your property. We have had a couple incidences recently where larger dogs got loose and attacked smaller dogs. We do not want to impose any additional restrictions on these pets, so we ask that you take special care to see they are restrained at all times. If your dog has a tendency to be aggressive, we suggest you consider a muzzle.

Chesapeake Beach receives a Banner City Award again for 2012 from the Maryland Municipal League (MML). The MML annually awards designations of Banner City / Town to those cities and towns that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to MML programs and activities through the involvement of their elected and appointed officials during the past year. The Banner City / Town designation is MML’s highest city/town member achievement award. The program is designed to encourage and reward exceptional participation in MML programs and activities and to foster teamwork among municipal officials to achieve program criteria. It is meant to be a challenge that requires foresight and commitment from the municipality.

Calvert County (including Chesapeake Beach) was recognized as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People" for the year 2012. This competition identifies cities nationwide that have made the well-being of children and youth a priority. The 2012 winners were chosen from a pool of more than 320 nominees from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Winning communities hail from 42 states, which is a record for the competition. The 100 Best Communities for Young People is now in its sixth cycle, recognizing communities making extraordinary efforts to reduce dropout rates and provide outstanding services and support to their youth.

Yard Debris pickup -- click here NOTE: Pickup of bagged yard waste (grass clippings, leaves) will begin April 3rd and continue every other Wednesday to include November 13th and 27th, 2013. Public Works will start picking up branches, limbs, twigs beginning in April on the Tuesday of your bulk trash week.
